Admissions to Brook Butterflies Pre-School Group
Up to 50 children per session can attend Brook Butterflies from the term after their third birthday subject to funding.
We now offer full time places or morning or afternoon part time places.
If you child attends all day they may bring a packed lunch to eat. School Meals can also be purchased.
Parents/carers are advised of a start date in writing and are given the opportunity to visit the setting with their child prior to entry. There is a pre-admission meeting.
The criteria for admissions adopted by Brook Butterflies are based on the following rules laid down by Dudley MBC. These rules are strictly applied when places are oversubscribed.
First priority shall be given to children who are:
- In the care of the Local Authority (Looked after Child/ren) or provided with accommodation by them under section 22 of the Children Act 1989.
- children who were previously looked after but immediately after being looked after became subject to an adoption, residence, or special guardianship order.
- Known by the LA to have additional educational needs/disability as defined by the Children Act 1989 or the Education Act 1996 and whose needs can be best met at the preferred maintained nursery – (applications made under this criterion would need to be supported by a recommendation from DMBC Specialist Early Years, Hearing Impaired, Visually Impaired or Physical Impairment and Medical Inclusion Services).
- currently subject to a child protection plan or child in need process or has a Common Assessment Framework (CAF) in place. A CAF provides a method for assessing needs for children and young people to support earlier intervention and to improve joint working between professionals and practioners who support the individual child or young person. A CAF will improve the co-ordination and consistency of and between assessments leading to fewer and shorter specialist assessments.
- living with a long-term physical or mental impairment or who has a life limiting progressive condition, where the Directorate of People Children’s Services is satisfied that attendance at the preferred maintained nursery will meet the needs of the child’s condition rather than any other maintained nursery, after reasonable adjustments have been implemented (Parents must provide supportive information from their child’s Paediatrician or specialist Consultant (medical), at the time of application in order to be considered under this criteria). This supportive information should include information about the needs of the child and should detail the difficulties the child would experience if they had to attend another maintained nursery. Parents should also indicate why the preferred maintained nursery is the most appropriate to meet their child’s condition rather than any other maintained nursery. (The School will not seek to obtain this evidence on behalf of parents).
- having an elder brother/sister, half brother/sister or step brother/sister attending the school/nursery at the requested time of entry. Children must reside at the same home address during the school week. (The definition of brother or sister also relates to adopted or fostered children living at the same home address).
- Any remaining places will be filled according to those children who live closest to the preferred maintained nursery. Distances will be calculated in a straight line from the home address to the main entrance of the schools nursery class.
Brook Primary School Admissions
Brook School has a published admission number of 60 places per year group. All children who have a birthday between 1st September and 31st August of a given academic year are admitted to the Reception class in one intake, at the beginning of the Autumn Term in September.
As the time approaches for your child to start school, you will be invited to attend a meeting with the Reception teacher, who will discuss all aspects of your child's new school with you.
As the majority of children who come to our primary school have been to our Brook Butterflies, the transition is very smooth for children.
Registering Your Child – Online Admissions
You will be invited to register your child for school at the start of the academic year prior to their year of entry, eg. Parents of children starting school in September 2017 were invited to register their child from early in September 2016.
Admission forms are now usually completed on line by parents but paper forms are available on request from the admissions department (not the school).
Admission criteria are determined by the LA and will be based upon the following:
a. First priority shall be given to children who are:
- looked after children
- children who were previously looked after but immediately after being looked after became subject to an adoption, a child arrangements order, or special guardianship order.
b. Second priority shall be given to children with:
- a “serious and ongoing medical condition” where the preferred community or voluntary controlled school is the most appropriate school to meet the condition.
- Parents must provide supportive information from their child’s Hospital Consultant at the time of application in order to be considered under this criteria.
- This supportive information should include information about the needs of the child and should detail the difficulties the child would experience if they attended another school.
- Parents should also indicate why the preferred school is the most appropriate to meet their child’s medical condition rather than any other school.
- The Local Authority will not seek to obtain medical evidence on behalf of parents.
c. Third priority shall be given to children who:
- have a brother/sister, half brother/sister (where the children share one common parent), or step-brother/step-sister, living at the same address and who will still be attending the preferred school in the academic year 2017/18.
d. Any places that remain available:
- once the above applicants have been admitted will be filled according to those children who live closest to the school, determined by a straight-line measurement in metres from the home address to the main entrance of the preferred school.
If an offer cannot be made, an appeals procedure has been established by the LA to consider such cases. Further information about the admissions process can be found on Dudley Council’s website.
